William and Kate, who celebrates her 34th birthday today, will leave Prince George and Princess Charlotte at home for the official tour.

The six-day Royal visit will also include several days in India. Kensington Palace revealed the Bhutan section of the tour yesterday, and also confirmed an official visit by Prince Harry to Nepal.

Both visits, to take place in the spring, have been requested by the Government, which is keen to strengthen ties with countries in the region.

Harry, 31, has long wanted to visit Nepal after serving with Gurkha troops in Afghanistan.

He has asked to see the country’s reconstruction efforts after the devastating earthquake there last April.

India, the most populous nation in the Commonwealth, is an increasingly important trading partner for the UK.

Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, 35, and his 25-year-old Queen Jetsun Pema, who is expecting the couple’s first child early this year, have been compared to William and Kate since their marriage in 2011.

Known as the Dragon King, he attended Magdalen College, Oxford, and his wife private London university Regent’s College.

Their landlocked country, overshadowed by Himalayan peaks, has preserved much of its Buddhist traditions, beautiful landscape and wildlife.

But since the king took over, following his father’s abdication in 2006, he has tried to make the country more outward-looking.
Bhutan recently embraced parliamentary democracy.

Its capital Thimphu does not have traffic lights but white-gloved officers directing vehicles.
