Eid today: Muslims marking with merriment

KATHMANDU: Muslims across the country on Friday are celebrating Eid al –Fitr with much gusto and fanfare.The day marks the end of Ramadan, the holy festival of the Muslim community. In this holy day, Muslims celebrate with family and friends the completion of fasting and enjoy blessings and joy.Prior to Eid, Muslim families give donation to the poor, which includes rice, barley, dates, rice, among other ritual foods.The government has declared public holiday today on the occasion of the festival. Newar people celebrate Gathe Mangal

KATHMANDU, Aug 5: The Newar community of the Kathmandu Valley observed Gathe Mangal, a festival celebrated to chase away evil spirits and usher in good fortunes, with much fanfare on Monday.

The Newar people say they celebrate Gathe Mangal to bar Ghanta-Karna, a mythological demon, from entering their houses and keep themselves, especially children, safe from diseases. Continue Reading→
