Diamond jubilee medals handed over to Everest summiteers

KATHMANDU, May 29: The government on Wednesday awarded Everest Diamond Jubilee medals to record-setting Everest summiteers to mark the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of the world´s tallest mountain.
Khil Raj Regmi, chairman of the interim election government, awarded the medals to 40 national and international climbers. Indian girl scales Mt Everest on prosthetic leg

LOBUCHE, SOLUKHUMBU, May 26:  Climbing Everest is considered gutsy even for able-bodied people for the risks involved in attempting the feat. But an Indian girl has surprised the whole world by scaling the summit on a prosthetic leg.
Arunima Sinha, 25, of Uttar Pradesh, who had her left leg amputated two years ago, scaled the 8,848 meters peak at 10:55 am on Tuesday. “We reached the summit on 21st May and I forgot all the difficulties we had faced on the way,” said the former national volleyball player of India on Saturday. Continue Reading→

Flights resume in Lukla airport

SOLUKHUMBU: Flights have resumed in the Lukla airport, on the lap of Mt Everest, in Solukhumbu district on Friday morning. The flights were disrupted due to bad weather for the past two days.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority, Lukla, aircraft of Tara Air and Sita Air made flights to and from the Tenzing-Hillary Airport as the weather improved this morning.Likewise, helicopters have also resumed their service. Continue Reading→

Nepal to celebrate diamond jubilee of first Everest ascent

KATHMANDU, May 22: The government is organizing various programs to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the first ascent of the Mt Everest.
“On May 26, International Everest Conference will be held in Khumjung, tree plantation program will be carried out at Hillary Park and paper presentation will be made by experts on mountaineering and climate change,” Subash Nirola, officiating CEO of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), told a press meet on Wednesday.National and international experts in tourism and mountaineering have been invited to attend the conference. Japanese climber‚ 80‚ becomes oldest atop Everest

KATHMANDU: An 80-year-old Japanese mountaineer on Thursday became the oldest person to reach the top of Mount Everest — although his record may last only a few days. An 81-year-old Nepalese man, who held the previous record, plans his own ascent next week.
Yuichiro Miura, who also conquered the 29,035-foot (8,850-meter) peak when he was 70 and 75, reached the summit at 9:05 a.m. local time Thursday, according to a Nepalese mountaineering official and Miura’s Tokyo-based support team. Continue Reading→

Everest summiteers set slew of records on sunny Sunday

KATHMANDU: With barely a few days remaining for the climbing season to come to an end, mountaineers made full use of a clear weather window today to set several new records by summiting the world’s highest peak.
David Liano Gonzalez, 33, set a new world record by scaling Mt Everest twice in one climbing season; British explorer Daniel Hughes, who spoke to the BBC from the top of the world’s highest mountain using his smartphone, became the first person to give a live interview from the roof of the world; British mountaineer Kenton Cool reached Everest summit for the 11th time, a record for any British climber; and Samina Baig became the first Pakistani woman to scale the world’s highest peak. 3-day event planned to mark 60th anniversary of first Everest ascent

The government has decided to organise a three-day event to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee (60th Anniversary) of the first ascent of the Mt Everest. According to government officials, the gala event has been planned from May 27-29.

Gala event planned for Everest diamond jubilee

The government has decided to accord a red carpet welcome to all the Everest summiteers who will be arriving in Nepal to celebrate the diamond jubilee of its first ascent next May.
