The Chepang people are the last hunter-gathers in Nepal. This small ethnic group live in the hills that lie near Chitwan. The trails between their villages are very much off the beaten track and you are unlikely to see anyone other than a few local people as they go about their business. As you climb the hills you will see the Annapurna mountain range before you.
This area is much less frequented by tourists. You stay in village homestay accommodation so be prepared for basic conditions (no ensuite bathrooms or hot showers). Menus can be quite limited but you will be eating local produce, grown organically. It this short trek, you will be given a chance to get a glimpse of the ‘real’ Nepal.
Please note, this trek can also be started in Pokhara with the option for a day sightseeing there. Finishing in Chitwan, you have the option to return to your starting point or staying in Chitwan.
Trek grade: This trek is grade 2. All days are quite short and below 2000m. The trails are sometimes a little overgrown, but not difficult.

Drive to Hugdi (360m) and start trekking to Kaule (6-7 hrs)
Starting the day with an early breakfast, you are driven to Hugdi, about halfway between Pokhara and Kathmandu (3-4 hours). Along the way, you have great views of Ganesh and Buddha Himal. You start your trek in the late morning, passing through villages and terraced fields. Looking down behind you, you have a spectacular view of the Trisuli River. Along the way, we stop for lunch. Here dal bhat, the traditional Nepali staple is your only choice. Rice with a vegetable curry and lentil soup, this is perfect trekking food. You continue up to reach Kaule, a little village surrounded by orange groves by the side of a river. Kaule is home to Chepang, Magar and Chhetri people. Staying overnight at a homestay, you will be able to sample home cooking using local and organic foods. (Village homestay)
Trek to Upardang Gadi (1280m, 5-6 hrs)
After breakfast, don’t forget to collect your packed-lunch as there is nowhere you can stop for lunch on the way to Gadi. Walking uphill for the first three hours, you then go down to Upardang Gadi, a historic village that was originally the region’s first district headquarters. On the top of the hill is a massive fort built by the Shah dynasty to defend the country from invasion from the south.
You stay in a cottage in the village. You have time to visit the historic fort and enjoy the spectacular views to the north of the sun setting over the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. Looking south, you have a view of the Chitwan Valley. In this village, you find a mix of Chepang, Magar and Gurung ethnic groups. In the evening, you are entertained by a cultural program of singing, dancing and playing of the madal by local people. (Village homestay)
Trek to Shaktikhor (350m) and drive to Chitwan/Pokhara/Kathmandu
After breakfast, you trek downhill for about 3 hours and arrive at Shaktikhor where there is a jeep waiting for you to take you to Sauraha, an hour away. This is the gateway to the famous Chitwan National Park. Here you can opt to continue your stay in Chitwan, or drive back to Kathmandu or Pokhara.
