This beautiful trek offers some of the greatest views of Everest. Even if it might be considered as a good sized mountain at 4065m, Pikey Peak is just a ‘danda’ or hill according to the locals! This could be because though you at just over 4000m, it looks and feels more like a hill than a mountain and it is quite easy to climb. This trek passes through villages where you rarely meet other trekkers. You have to be prepared to stay in fairly basic homestay style accommodation, but you get the chance to see authentic rural life in this unspoilt area in the foothills of Everest.
Designed as part of an initiative to bring sustainable tourism in the poorer areas that lie close to the more famous routes like Everest Base Camp, this route passes villages where few trekkers go and offer some of the best views of the Himalayan panorama stretching from the Annapurnas across to Everest and Kanchenchunga.
Trek grade: This trek is grade 3 as most days are 5-6 hrs and you climb to a maximum altitude of just over 4000m. However the trails are very good and this is quite an easy trek, never too far from human habitation.

Arrive in Kathmandu
Your first impression of arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport is an experience in itself. But don’t be worried by the apparent confusion as your airport representative will be waiting to welcome you with your name written on a placard. Depending on traffic, you will be at your hotel within 20 minutes or so.
Kathmandu sightseeing
The day is spent visiting some of the major World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu. More…
You will have plenty of time in the afternoon to prepare for your trek and check that you have everything you need. You might want to visit Thamel, the tourist hub of Nepal where you can easily find all you need for trekking. Or if you just want to relax, there are many cafes and bakeries serving excellent local tea and coffee. It is best to avoid the street food, however, unless you have a very strong stomach. It is recommended that you have an early night as you will have an early start in the morning.
Kathmandu - Salleri (2,800m) (drive 10-12 hrs)
Though it is a long day on the road (10 -12 hours), it is incredibly scenic all the way with very little traffic. If you leave Kathmandu on a Friday, you are in Salleri for the Saturday weekly market. The district headquarters of Solukhumbu, it is a small town on a hillside 20 minutes walk from Phaplu airport (2670m). The main street of Salleri is lined with an assortment of shops selling everything from Solar panels to Goldstar trainers (Nepal’s own brand).
Salleri- Junbesi (2700m, 6-7 hrs)
You continue to Junbesi through a forest and past the meeting of two rivers where you can see a small primary school and a couple of lodges. Junbesi is a traditional Sherpa village with a 17th-century monastery and 6m high statue of Lord Buddha. There are plenty of little tea shops and great views of Mount Numbur in the background.
Thuptencholing (3000m) – Junbesi (2700m, 2-3 hrs)
From Junbesi it is just two hours to Thuptencholing where there is a big monastery that was built in the 1960s following the settlement of Tibetans here. The seat of His Holiness Trulshig Rinpoche, there is a monastic community of over 500 monks and nuns.
Junbesi (2700m) via Taktor – Lamjura Pass (3530m, 5-6 hrs)
Having had plenty of time to acclimatize over the last 10 days, you now start to ascend a bit higher, following the main Jiri-Lukla trail up through Taktor and to Lamjura, where you spend the night.
Lamjura Pass (3530m), Pikey Peak (4065m) – Pikey Base Camp (3640m, 6 hrs)
You climb the trail to Jase Bhanjyang and up to the saddle between the two Pikey peaks. Taking time to enjoy the spectacular views from Pikey II (4065m) the panorama stretches from the Annapurnas to Kanchenchunga. If you are feeling energetic, you might want to climb the second peak but there’s only 12m difference between them. You then walk an easy 45 minutes or so down to Pikey Peak Base Camp, where there are a couple of lodges where you spend the night. There is also a dairy and you can try the yak cheese that is made here.
Pikey Base Camp (3640m)– Bhulbule – Jhapre (2920m, 5 hrs)
It’s downhill all the way now and the trail gently follows the ridge down past some old yak herders houses, along with a mani wall and past Bhulebule, a tiny hamlet of two or three houses. Jhapre is an attractive little village with some lodges and a small Buddhist monastery. There an excellent viewpoint from near one of the lodges where you can admire the sunset.
Jhapre (2920m) – Sigane – Pattale (2840m, 4-5 hrs)
From Jhapre it is an easy hike, contouring around the hillside alongside terraces, accompanied by beautiful scenery all along the way. You might want to stop for tea at a small Sherpa village like Sigane. Then it is an easy walk to Pattale, a larger village with a few lodges and the road back to Kathmandu. At Pattale, you should have time to climb behind the village to the last of the viewpoints that offer breath-taking views of the Himalayas.
Pattale (2840m) - Kathmandu (drive 8-9 hrs)
Ending at Pattale means you are a couple of hours nearer to Kathmandu. The journey takes 8-9 hours and you should arrive in Kathmandu in the late afternoon.
Departure
You transfer to Tribhuvan Airport to connect with your onward flight. Please note that you should check in three hours prior to your flight time.
